The purpose of the social committee is to plan and execute social events in order to foster community among Schreyer Scholars. Our goal is to plan events that appeal to Scholars of all ages in and out of the Living and Learning Community.
One of our most popular events is the Schreyer formal, co-sponsored by the Engineering Undergraduate Council. Formal is held once in the fall semester and once again in the spring semester. Admission is open to any Penn State student and the social committee is responsible for decorations, advertisements, and ticket sales. Another big event hosted by the committee is Coffeehouse. It is a display of live music, talents, and other acts alongside a serving of hot beverages and pastries. In previous years the social team has gathered acapella singers, musicians, and comedy troupes to perform in the Grandfather Clock Lounge in Atherton hall. Similar to formal Coffeehouse is held twice in an academic year, traditionally in the weeks before finals. The social committee is also responsible for the coordination of student council’s Welcome Week. Welcome Week occurs the first week of the fall semester. Each day an event is held to welcome new and returning Scholars to campus. Events in the past have included movie showings in 100 Thomas (Penn State’s largest lecture hall), cookie decorating, a general body student council meeting, and hiking Mt. Nittany. In between our larger events we also plan bonding events for the council, including ice skating at Pegula Ice Arena and dinners in downtown State College. |
My favorite social memory from last year was our Roaring Twenties themed formal. My role in the beginning of the night was selling tickets and I couldn't believe how high our attendance was. It was the most highly attended formal out of any of the ones I have been to! It felt amazing to see such a long line of dressed-up students excited for the night. As a social committee member it felt rewarding to coordinate an event that so many people anticipated and attended. Academic stress and pressure may be experienced from time to time as a Schreyer Scholar, but the opportunity to provide events like formal where students can have fun serves as motivation for the social committee!
