Schreyer Student Council participates in THON to help find a cure for pediatric cancer and to honor our THON families, the Millers and the Sylveses. We love our THON families and our goal is to support them in any way that we can.
As a THON organization, we love attending events with our families each year, and spending time with them at THON! Some of our favorite things to do are an annual Halloween party with the Millers, and getting to spend time with the Sylveses. Being paired with our families and getting to know them is what makes STUCO THON truly magical, and it is such a blessing. Tyler Miller was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on December 30, 2011, when he was ten years old. Remembering the day that Tyler was diagnosed with cancer, Jana, Tyler’s mother, writes, “There is nothing in this world that can prepare a parent to hear those words. Your child has cancer...how do you explain this to your child when you cannot even comprehend the words yourself...this doesn’t happen to children.. why....how.....what now...my mind was racing but not fully comprehending anything either.” Tyler battled cancer for three years with courage and positivity. Although Tyler was in immeasurable pain everyday, he utilized the resources that the Four Diamonds Fund provided him such as music therapy to give himself hope. Schreyer Student Council was recently paired with the Sylves family for THON 2019. Jack Sylves was diagnosed with Ph+ Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in July 2018, and he has continued to stay strong throughout his fight. Jack is five years old, and his older sister, Marlowe is seven years old. Jack loves tractors and the outdoors, while Marlowe loves art and reading. One of our first memories with the Sylves family was at the creamery during May of last year. We had so much fun eating ice cream and playing tag for hours! We were so happy and grateful to have been able to spend time with them during THON weekend 2020! Being part of STUCO’s THON committee provides so many amazing opportunities. Primarily, you have the opportunity to bond and learn from our THON families, and form amazing relationships with them. STUCO THON is also a way to give back to the THON community at large. We work as an organization to fundraise for THON through various sources. One of our most memorable fundraisers was a THON Nation fundraiser where we were able to host a Bingo fundraiser, and play a few intense bingo games while we were there. STUCO also stands at THON every year, an indescribable experience. Being involved in STUCO THON is a great way to make friends and give back to THON! |
My favorite memories were our THON Nation fundraising trip to Erie and getting to see the Sylveses on the floor during THON weekend.
